Deaths from electric shock are increasing in the rural areas of the district due to unsafe use of electricity. In the past month alone, five people died from electric shocks.
According to Khagendra Bahadur Khadka, spokesperson of the District Police Office, 10 people have died from electric shocks in the last four months. Most of the victims were residents of rural areas who did not have enough technical knowledge about electricity.
Most deaths happened while using electric motors to draw water, fishing by putting electricity in rivers, or cutting wood. Many people do not know how to properly operate electric motors.
Lack of knowledge and carelessness are causing people to die from electric shocks. In the fiscal year 2081/82 (2024/25), 15 people died from electric shocks in Jhapa district.
Recently, 22-year-old Sandip Rajbanshi from Mechinagar Municipality–5 died at home due to an electric shock. He was repairing a broken table fan on Monday evening when he got shocked and became unconscious. He was taken to Mechi Aamda Hospital in Dhulabari but died during treatment, the police said.
