A young man from Kawasoti-16, Danda, in eastern Nawalparasi, has died while working in Portugal. 25-year-old Bijay Pariyar passed away in a hospital during treatment, according to his family.

Pariyar had gone to Croatia in 2021 with labor approval and entered Portugal three months later. He had been working on a farm in Portugal for the past four years.

His father, Nim Bahadur Pariyar, said the family received the news of his death on Baisakh 11 (April 23, 2025). The family is deeply saddened and has requested help from the government and the Nepali community in Portugal to bring his body back to Nepal.

“He used to tell me not to worry, that he would get better,” his father said. “We talked on the phone on Wednesday, and on Thursday, we heard he had died. I want to see my son’s face one last time. Please help bring his body home.”

The death of the young man has left his family and the whole village in mourning. He returned home during Dashain and went back to Portugal after Tihar. During his visit, he had some health problems, and doctors found fluid in his lungs and nerve-related issues. Still, he chose to get treatment abroad.

The ward chairman of Kawasoti-15, Anand Shrestha, said they are helping to bring the body back to Nepal. The ward office has also contacted the Nawalpur Contact Society in Portugal for legal and technical help. Bijay fell ill shortly after arriving in Portugal, even though he had taken medicine from Nepal.
