Former CEO of Karnali Development Bank Arrested for Embezzlement

Rajendra Bir Rai, the founding chairman and former CEO of Karnali Development Bank, has been arrested for allegedly embezzling over Rs 2.5 billion. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police arrested him on Saturday from Belahiya, Rupandehi.

Rai had been on the run after being accused of misusing the bank’s funds. CIB chief AIG Chandra Kuber Khapung confirmed that he was arrested in connection with the case.

Karnali Development Bank was established in 2060 BS. Rai served as CEO from 2076 to 2079 and had also worked as chairman of the board multiple times. CIB stated that Rai is being investigated under the Banking Offense and Punishment Act.

Originally from Salyan, Rai had been living in Banke district. According to CIB, other individuals are also under investigation, including former CEO Dinesh Kumar Rawat, former head of the finance department Bed Prakash Thakuri, and the current CEO and finance chief Niraj Bikram Shah.

Earlier, on the 5th of Poush, the bank formed an internal probe committee led by board chairperson Om Prakash Mishra. The committee found that over Rs 1.26 billion had been misused by Rai and others, and recommended further investigation by the authorities.
