Tragedy struck in India as an Air India plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing everyone on board. Police confirmed that all 242 people on the aircraft have died.
“There appear to be no survivors,” said Police Commissioner G.S. Malik, speaking to the Associated Press. The crash occurred in a residential area that also had offices, and police say it’s possible that some people on the ground may have also lost their lives.
Authorities are still trying to confirm the total number of casualties.
The aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was on its way to Gatwick Airport in London when it went down just minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon. The plane crashed into a housing area where many doctors lived.
The investigation is ongoing as emergency services work at the site, but for now, it is clear—no one on the plane survived.
