Samsung quietly blocks bootloader unlocking in Samsung One UI 8

Samsung’s new One UI 8 update is making a big change for tech-savvy users — and not everyone will be happy about it.

Phones running One UI 8, including the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7, no longer show the toggle that allows unlocking the bootloader. This feature is what lets people install custom ROMs or modify the phone’s system.

  • In the US: Bootloader unlocking has been disabled for years.
  • Outside the US: Previously allowed, but One UI 8 now appears to remove the option in many regions too.

Enthusiasts on XDA Developers noticed the change while testing the One UI 8 beta for the Galaxy S25. Digging into the code, they found the line:

androidboot.other.locked=1

That “1” means the bootloader is locked. In earlier versions, it was set to “0” outside the US, allowing unlocking.

Without bootloader unlocking, users can’t easily install custom software or make deep changes to their phone. This is a major shift for people who enjoy customizing their devices.

Samsung hasn’t commented yet, so it’s unclear if this is a permanent move or just part of the beta.
