A man has died after being shot by police during an operation to stop alcohol smuggling in Saptari district near the Nepal-India border.

The incident happened in Rajgadh Rural Municipality-2, Kamalpur. The person who died has been identified as 35-year-old Lalu Yadav.

According to DSP Jitendra Basnet, spokesperson of Saptari District Police Office, they received information around 10 PM that a large quantity of liquor was being stored to be smuggled into India. A team of 10 police officers led by Inspector Birendra Kumar Yadav was sent to the area.

The police recovered 80 cartons of liquor from Kamalpur and said there were more. They mentioned that smugglers used stones and other objects to attack the officers, making it difficult to control the situation.
