Less rainfall as monsoon weakens due to low moisture: Meteorologists

Meteorologists have said that the monsoon appears weaker than previous days due to reduced moisture in the air.

Although the monsoon’s low-pressure line is currently located in Nepal’s Tarai region, which is a favorable area for rainfall, there is not enough moisture in the system to produce heavy rain, according to meteorologist Hari Prasad Dahal.

Explaining further, Dahal said, “Nepal receives monsoon winds from two branches—one from the Arabian Sea and another from the Bay of Bengal. Until recently, moist air from the Arabian Sea was arriving well. But now, moisture from that direction has stopped, which is why rainfall has decreased today.”

Usually, heavy rain occurs where the low-pressure line is active. But due to the current lack of moisture, only moderate rain is expected in the Tarai region.

Forecast for today

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, moderate rain is likely in some parts of the hilly and Tarai areas of Koshi and Lumbini provinces this afternoon. A few places in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces may receive heavy rain.

For tonight, moderate rain is likely in parts of Madhesh, Koshi, and Lumbini provinces, with chances of heavy rainfall in a few hilly areas of Koshi province.

Meteorologist Dahal added that moisture is expected to gradually return in the coming days as winds from the Bay of Bengal pick up again, which could strengthen the monsoon and bring more rainfall.
