In their final Group A match of the AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers, Nepal suffered a heavy 11-0 defeat to North Korea.
The match was played on Sunday at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan. North Korea, a strong team, scored 5 goals in the first half and 6 in the second half.
Winning all three group matches, North Korea topped the group with 9 points and qualified for next year’s AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup in Thailand. They are also the defending champions. In the qualifiers, North Korea scored a total of 36 goals without conceding any.
This was Nepal’s first loss in the qualifiers, and it ended their hopes of advancing. Nepal earned 4 points from three matches.
Nepal had drawn 1-1 with Bhutan in their first match and beaten Saudi Arabia 1-0 in their second.
In this tournament, the 8 group winners qualify directly, while the best three second-place teams also advance. However, since second-place teams in five other groups already have 6 points, Nepal has no chance to qualify as one of the best runners-up.
Nepal had aimed to beat Bhutan and Saudi Arabia and hold North Korea to a draw to qualify, but could not achieve that goal.
