Jhumka prison escapee held in Birtamod

SUNSARI, AUGUST 16 – A prisoner who escaped from Jhumka Prison in Sunsari has been captured in Birtamod, Jhapa.

The inmate, Rupak Paudel Khatri, who was facing a rape case, had fled from Block B of the prison on the morning of 13 August (Sawan 28).

DSP Yograj Khatiwada, spokesperson for the Sunsari District Police Office, said Khatri was arrested on Saturday morning from Ward No. 10 of Birtamod Municipality in Jhapa. He added that Khatri is being brought back to Sunsari for further investigation.

Khatri, originally from Diprung Chuychhampa Rural Municipality-2 in Khotang, had been ordered by the court to be sent to prison on July 5 (Sawan 21, 2082) for pre-trial detention in a gang rape case.

Earlier, the Sunsari District Court had sentenced him to 13 years in prison, a fine of Rs. 500,000, and Rs. 30,000 in compensation on March 9, 2081, after the case concluded.

Following his escape, the Sunsari administration formed a five-member investigation committee led by Assistant Chief District Officer Lokman Shrestha to examine the incident.
