The National Public Health Laboratory has confirmed cholera infection in eight out of ten samples sent from Birgunj.
Laboratory director Dr. Ranjan Raj Bhatta said stool samples of suspected patients were tested. Using the Vitek culture technology, results came within 48 hours, showing cholera in eight samples. The remaining two results will be available by Wednesday.
He added that while rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) had already confirmed cholera cases in Birgunj, the samples were sent to Kathmandu for further confirmation. Bhatt explained that culture tests were necessary because RDT results alone might not always be reliable.
