Senior singer Indira Gole Gurung, who sang in more than a thousand songs in different languages and styles, has passed away.
She died at 2 am on Wednesday at her apartment in Hattiban, Lalitpur, according to Phulkumar Tamang, chairman of Tamang Dazang and a singer-songwriter.
Indira had been suffering from cancer for the past two years. She received treatment at the cancer hospital in Harisiddhi and had been staying in the apartment for the last two weeks with her youngest daughter for further care and rest.
Her body will be cremated with Buddhist rituals.
Indira was a former president of the Tamang Artists’ Society and played an important role in promoting Tamang music worldwide. After passing the voice test at Radio Nepal, she also sang many popular Nepali folk songs.
She was born on October 19, 1966, in Bhardeu, Lalitpur. Through Tamang selo and other folk songs, she helped preserve and promote Tamang culture.
Some of her evergreen songs include Changunarayan Than, Jaifoolko Basna, Ghar Ta Chhaunima, Safa Tyaampuri, Hoi Tangba, and Gang Gyapse. Indira lent her voice to over 5,000 songs across Tamang selo, folk duets, and modern music.
Various organizations, including the Tamang Artists’ Association, had been raising funds for her treatment. She lived in Hattiban with her younger daughter. Indira had two daughters, and her husband had already passed away.
