Just 24 hours after Jurgen Klopp’s emotional farewell, Liverpool announced their new head coach – Arne Slot. He was given what many called a “mission impossible”: replacing the legendary Klopp.
Klopp was known for his aggressive style of football and his love for the city of Liverpool. In his 9 years at the club, he won 7 major trophies, including a Champions League and a Premier League title. That Premier League win was Liverpool’s first in 30 years, and it made Klopp one of the club’s greatest managers, alongside legends like Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.
Slot knew the job wouldn’t be easy. History shows how hard it is to replace a successful manager. For example, David Moyes struggled after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and Unai Emery didn’t last long after taking over from Arsène Wenger at Arsenal. But Slot made a tough job look surprisingly easy, as if he were just taking a peaceful walk through Stanley Park.
Last season, the title race was between Manchester City and Arsenal. Most people thought it would be the same this time, and few expected Liverpool to even challenge. In fact, when BBC Sports asked 30 football experts who would win the league, none of them chose Liverpool.
But just a few weeks into the season, it was clear that bringing Slot from Feyenoord was not a mistake. He worked with nearly the same team Klopp had left behind, and they won 8 of their first 10 league games – the best start ever for a new Liverpool manager. Manchester City’s inconsistency and Arsenal’s ups and downs helped Liverpool stay on top of the table since mid-September.
However, not everything went smoothly. Liverpool lost to Newcastle in the League Cup final and were knocked out of the FA Cup by second-division side Plymouth. They were also eliminated from the Champions League by PSG – all disappointing results.
Still, the Premier League was Liverpool’s biggest goal. This season’s title is their 20th top-flight championship, tying them with rival Manchester United. That’s a huge achievement for the club.
This win puts Slot in a special group of managers who won the league in their debut season, like José Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini, and Antonio Conte.
Some say Liverpool under Slot is less aggressive and exciting than under Klopp. But the team looks more disciplined now. Slot probably doesn’t care about the criticism – his team scored two or more goals in nearly every game and are the highest scorers in the league. He didn’t even need to buy many big-name players; instead, he boosted the confidence of the talented squad Klopp left behind.
After beating Tottenham and securing the title, Slot said, “I feel very proud. If you ask me how I feel right now, I don’t have the words. What we saw before and after the game at Anfield and across the city tells the whole story. Five years ago, when we won the league, there were no fans with us. That’s why this win feels extra special.”
