Arsenal is close to signing Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze, but the transfer is not meant to replace injured Kai Havertz.

The Gunners have reportedly agreed on a £65 million deal with Palace for Eze. After missing Arsenal’s Conference League playoff match, Eze has been allowed to undergo a medical examination.

Eze is seen as a solution to strengthen Arsenal’s attack, especially after Havertz suffered a knee injury during training on Wednesday (20/8). If Havertz requires surgery, he could be out for a long time.

Although Tottenham Hotspur also showed interest in signing Eze, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta clarified that the move had been planned for a long time. Eze is expected to improve Arsenal’s left wing, a position currently held by Gabriel Martinelli.

“I’ve always been clear that Arsenal haven’t stopped looking for players,” Arteta told ESPN. “We are always looking for opportunities to bring in new players. This is not a reaction to an injury—we have been preparing for a long time and decided this is the right moment to sign Eze.”

Eze’s arrival is part of Arsenal’s long-term plan to strengthen their attacking options, rather than an immediate response to Havertz’s injury.
