A 3-year-old boy has died and three family members are seriously ill after eating wild mushrooms in Rukum East.

The incident took place in Serabang, Bhume Rural Municipality–5. The boy, Yojan Sunar, died during treatment, according to police.

His mother, 35-year-old Rajkumari Sunar, and two sisters—9-year-old Ayusha Sunar and 6-year-old Bhagyarekha Sunar—also fell seriously ill after eating the mushrooms.

On Friday evening, the family had eaten mushrooms picked from the nearby forest. Soon after, they began showing symptoms like fever, vomiting, and headache. As their condition worsened, they were taken to Rukum East Hospital on Monday morning.

Due to the seriousness of their condition, Yojan, Bhagyarekha, and their mother were referred to Salyan Hospital for further treatment. Sadly, Yojan passed away at 3 p.m. on Tuesday while undergoing treatment there, said DSP Umashankar Prasad Yadav of the Rukum East District Police Office.

According to DSP Yadav, Bhagyarekha’s condition remains critical. She has now been referred to Dang for advanced treatment, while Ayusha has been sent to Rukum West for further care.

Police have confirmed that the illness was caused by consuming toxic wild mushrooms.
