After the late-night arrest of Milan Gurung, known as Chakre Milan, from Hotel Sambala in Maharajgunj, new details have come to light about the party, the people involved, and the police’s next steps.

According to police sources, Milan’s birthday had turned into a two-day celebration with dozens of guests, including rappers, supporters, and individuals with a history of criminal activity. Officers say Milan was seen earlier in the day at Pashupatinath, handing out money to people and later in Thamel with a group of rappers. Police confirmed that he cut nearly 20 cakes during the celebration.

The party later moved to Maharajgunj with a convoy of vehicles. Noise and disturbances from the hotel led to police intervention, and Milan, along with about 50 others, was taken into custody for causing public disturbance.

No criminal charges yet

Although police detained a large group, it’s still unclear what charges will be filed. Many of those arrested have past criminal records, but Milan himself hasn’t been linked to any recent crimes. Officials say they’re still deciding whether to pursue legal action.

Not the first time birthday celebrations caused arrests

This is not the first time such celebrations have drawn police attention. In early 2025, seven people were arrested for using swords and khukuris to cut cakes in TikTok videos. They were released after the government attorney chose not to move the case forward.

Gang leaders turned politicians

Chakre Milan was once known as a leading gangster in the Kathmandu Valley, especially after the 2006 people’s movement. Other prominent figures from that time included Deepak Manange in Thamel, Raju Gorkhali in Chabahil, and later, Ganesh Lama and Dawa Lama.

Some of them moved into politics. Manange became a provincial minister in Gandaki. Dawa Lama, once wanted by police, is now vice-chair of Bhumlu Rural Municipality in Kavre. Ganesh Lama is active in Nepali Congress.

Manange is currently in prison, serving a 5-year sentence for attacking Milan in 2004 with a sword. Though he had earlier been released after a lighter sentence, the High Court overturned the decision, and the Supreme Court upheld it last year.

A shift in gang activity

In the past, Milan and others were active in collecting protection money and controlling contracts. But with online bidding and stricter police action, such activities have decreased. Major crackdowns—including the police encounters that killed gang figures like ‘Chari’ and ‘Ghainte’—have led to fewer public displays of gangster influence.

Still, new police leadership often brings renewed focus on people with a criminal background. Just recently, police arrested Yuvraj Gurung, also known as ‘Sanubhai’, from a dohori restaurant in Thamel. He had previously been caught for assaulting a club manager in 2023.

What’s next for Chakre Milan?

Police say they’re reviewing footage, social media posts, and witness accounts from the birthday party. For now, Milan remains in custody along with dozens of his guests. What charges—if any—will be filed remains to be seen.
