Between mid-July 2024 and mid-July 2025, 41 people in Hetauda, Nepal, were victims of rape. The local police office reported that most of the victims were girls under the age of 16.

Key Facts

  • Total Victims: 41
  • Victims under 16: 28 girls
    • 9 were under 10 years old.
    • 19 were between 10 and 16 years old.
  • Victims 16 and older: 13 people

The police investigation found that most of the child victims were harmed by neighbors and relatives. This problem is growing in both cities and rural areas.

According to the police, some women and teenage girls in cities become victims due to hanging out with the wrong people, watching inappropriate content, and drinking alcohol. Young girls are often tricked and then harmed.

Maya Lama, who heads the local branch of Maiti Nepal, an organization that protects women and children, stated that girls are especially unsafe around their own relatives and neighbors. She added that a lack of parental supervision, limited awareness, and poverty in villages make young girls more vulnerable.

The number of child rape cases has gone up slightly compared to the previous year (2023-2024), when 30 girls were raped.

The police have successfully arrested most of the attackers. Maya Lama believes that society should shame those who commit these crimes and the government should punish them harshly. She also emphasized that everyone must help the victims and their families get back on their feet.

In Nepal, the law states that those found guilty of rape can be sentenced to 7 to 10 years in prison. An extra 5 years can be added if the victim is disabled.
