More Nepali citizens deported from the United States are arriving in Kathmandu today. They are being sent back by the U.S. government on a special chartered flight.

According to Nepal’s Immigration Office, the U.S. chartered flight carrying the deported Nepalis is expected to land at Tribhuvan International Airport at around 4:15 PM on Sunday.

Anjan Neupane, spokesperson for the airport’s Immigration Office, confirmed that deported Nepalis are arriving today but said the exact number is not yet known.

“We received a letter 10–12 days ago stating that some Nepalis would be deported, but the number was not mentioned clearly,” Neupane said. “We’ll know the exact figure once the plane lands.”

According to immigration sources, at least 40 Nepalis are likely on the flight. Initially, 48 people were supposed to be deported, but some were stopped at the last moment, so the final number may be slightly lower.

The U.S. chartered plane is also dropping off deported nationals of other countries and will return after landing in Kathmandu.

Since Donald Trump returned to power in January 2025, the U.S. government has tightened immigration rules. Those who overstayed their visa, violated immigration laws, or had poor conduct have been detained and sent back to their home countries. Nepalis are also being deported under this policy.

However, the exact reason for the deportation of the individuals arriving today has not been clearly stated. “The letter says they violated U.S. immigration laws, but it doesn’t specify whether they entered illegally, overstayed, or had other issues,” Neupane added.

Since Trump’s second term began in January 2025, 140 Nepalis have already been deported from the U.S. According to immigration data, 6 were deported in January, 20 in February, 30 in March, 26 in April, and 58 in May.

Sources say most deportees had paid large sums to agents to enter the U.S. illegally.

The deportation of Nepalis from the U.S. is not new. Immigration records show 35 were deported in 2021, 22 in 2022, 24 in 2023, and 52 in 2024.

Once deported Nepalis arrive in Kathmandu, they are usually questioned briefly by the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau and then allowed to go home. Investigations are only launched if someone files a complaint against the agents involved.
