Frank Caprio, the beloved Providence, Rhode Island municipal court judge known as “America’s nicest judge,” passed away on August 20 at the age of 88. He had been suffering from late-stage pancreatic cancer.
Judge Caprio served nearly four decades in the courtroom, earning admiration for his compassion, humor, and fair-minded approach to justice. “Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond,” read a statement on his official Facebook page.
Even in his final days, Caprio remained connected with his community. Last week, he shared a short video on Facebook from the hospital, asking followers to “remember me in your prayers” after experiencing a health setback. In past messages, he emphasized his hope that justice could be administered without being oppressive, reflecting the philosophy that made him a household name.
In December 2023, shortly after turning 87, Caprio revealed his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in an emotional video. He asked for prayers while also affirming his commitment to fight the disease with medical treatment. “Just knowing that you were keeping me in your thoughts means the world to me,” he said at the time.
Pancreatic cancer, which affects the organ responsible for producing digestive enzymes and regulating blood sugar, is often deadly, particularly if diagnosed late. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, changes in skin color, and jaundice. Experts emphasize the importance of early detection in improving survival chances.
Judge Caprio’s warmth and kindness went far beyond the courtroom. He was known for his humor, fairness, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His passing marks the end of an era for the Providence community and countless others who admired him nationwide.
Tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, former defendants, and fans alike, remembering Caprio not only as a judge but as a person who exemplified empathy, integrity, and the power of human kindness.
