Inter Miami Beat Montreal 4-2, End Poor Run of Form

Inter Miami defeated Montreal 4-2 in the MLS, showing signs of recovery after a string of poor results.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez each scored two goals in the win. Suárez also assisted one goal. This was only Miami’s second win in their last eight matches.

Their last victory came on May 3. Since then, the team had suffered two losses and two draws, falling to sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

This recent dip in form was surprising. In the 2024 regular season, Miami had a record-breaking run with 22 wins, 4 draws, and 8 losses, collecting 74 points — the highest in MLS history. They also won the Supporters’ Shield.

In their previous match, Miami had made a strong comeback from two goals down against Philadelphia. That momentum continued against Montreal, who are currently at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

Messi scored his first goal of the match from a Sergio Busquets pass — his seventh of the season. Later in the 68th minute, he dribbled past defenders to assist Suárez’s goal.

Suárez scored again in the 71st minute, and sealed the win in the 87th minute with another goal from his own assist play. This match was especially important for Suárez. Last season, he was the second-highest scorer in MLS with 20 goals. However, before this match, he had scored only twice this season. With two goals here, he seems to have regained his confidence.

Montreal’s Dante Sealy and Victor Loturi each scored once, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome. Montreal’s season has been disappointing, with just one win so far.

This win comes at the right time for Miami. Their next match is on Saturday at home against Columbus Crew. After that, they will face Egypt’s Al Ahly in the FIFA Club World Cup on June 14.
