The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended for one week amid rising military tensions between India and Pakistan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the decision after assessing the current situation.
According to BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla, “We have only suspended the IPL for a week. We will evaluate the situation again before making any further decisions.” BCCI said it will announce new dates and venues after consulting the concerned authorities and stakeholders.
So far, 57 matches have been played in this IPL season. Only 12 league matches were left before the final, which was originally scheduled for May 25. However, due to security concerns, BCCI has decided to halt the tournament temporarily.
The 58th match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala was canceled mid-game. As the match was ongoing, Pakistan launched missile and drone attacks near Jammu, Punjab, and Rajasthan borders. A blackout was imposed in Dharamshala, floodlights were turned off, and the spectators were evacuated from the stadium.
Before the Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders match on Thursday, the national anthem was played in honor of security personnel involved in “Operation Sindoor.”
