Former FC Porto captain Jorge Costa has died from a heart attack. He passed away on Tuesday night at the club’s training center.
Costa famously led Porto to win the UEFA Champions League in 2004 under the management of Jose Mourinho. He retired from playing football in 2006 and later took on various managerial roles.
Porto released a statement saying Costa played a major role in building the club’s reputation and described his death as a great loss.
He is the third former Porto player to pass away suddenly this year, following the deaths of Diego Costa, who spent six years at the club, and his brother Andre Silva.
Mourinho, who now manages Turkish club Fenerbahce, expressed deep sorrow and called Costa’s death a painful loss for the entire football world.
Jorge Costa graduated from Porto’s academy and played 324 matches for the club. By 2005, he had helped Porto win 24 titles, including the Champions League, UEFA Cup, and eight Portuguese league titles.
