An electric crematorium has been built on the eastern bank of the Kankai River in Kankai Municipality-4, Jhapa, and will start operating within a week.

The project cost Rs 23 million, with Rs 20 million from the Koshi Province Government, Rs 2 million from the municipality, and Rs 1 million from local donors.

According to Kankai Municipality Mayor Rajendra Kumar Pokharel, a procedure has been prepared for its operation.

During a test, the body of an 80-year-old woman was cremated successfully. Gopal Kharel, General Secretary of the Kankai Ghat Management Committee, said the machine takes about 50 minutes to cremate a human body, compared to 3 to 3.5 hours with firewood.

The electric crematorium will save time, reduce firewood use, and help protect the environment.
