Two Nepali teenage sisters who went missing from Mumbai, India around three weeks ago have been found dead in Bhaktapur, Nepal. They were discovered in suspicious condition on Thursday morning.
According to Bhaktapur police, 16-year-old Menuka Kandel and her 13-year-old sister Sirjana Kandel from Panchapuri Municipality-8, Surkhet, were found dead inside a rented room in a house at Bode, Madhyapur Thimi-8. Their bodies were hanging with nylon ropes tied to an iron bar in the passage of the room.
Police said both girls had been living there for about 15 days and had told the house owner they were students.
The parents of the girls are currently in India and are expected to arrive in Kathmandu soon. Until then, police have secured the scene and have not moved the bodies. A full investigation will begin after their arrival.
The parents told an online TV in India that their daughters went missing after saying they were going to computer classes. Later, the younger daughter sent a voice message saying they had gone to Bangalore and would not return soon. The parents were shocked and started searching everywhere.
They suspected someone may have forced or tricked the girls into leaving. The parents even received information that the girls had been working in a hotel in Kathmandu, possibly in a place without CCTV cameras.
Police have not confirmed this claim and said they are still investigating. The exact cause of death and what happened to the girls is unknown for now. A post-mortem will be done after the parents arrive.
