Nepal has completed 18 years since it began practicing a federal democratic republic, which was established as a result of a peaceful people’s movement led by seven political parties and an armed struggle by the then-rebel Maoist party.

On Jestha 15, 2065 B.S., the first meeting of the elected Constituent Assembly officially ended the 240-year-old monarchy and declared Nepal a federal democratic republic. Since then, Republic Day is celebrated every year to honor this historic achievement.

On this day, Nepali people gained the right to freedom, social justice, and inclusive, proportional democracy, where citizens are the highest authority. The day also marks the victory of the people over hereditary rule.

The federal democratic system ensures political rights and encourages unity among people to build a better future. Its key responsibilities include solving problems related to education, health, transport, and social security, ending poverty, and raising Nepal’s image on the global stage.

The essence of the republican constitution is to follow the will and feelings of the people. That’s why this day should be seen as a celebration of democracy, rights, and freedom. A republic is not just a political system but also a way of governing and living, built on liberal values.

Among all governance systems in the world, the democratic republic is considered the best. It is seen as a powerful tool to improve people’s lives and make the nation prosperous.

Today, the 18th Republic Day is being celebrated across the country with various programs. A special ceremony is being held at Tundikhel, where President Ramchandra Paudel and other top leaders are present. The program includes tributes to the martyrs who gave their lives for change, and remembrance of those who sacrificed and struggled for democracy.

In the fight for freedom, justice, and prosperity, many Nepalis suffered imprisonment and torture. Political leaders believe this day reminds us of the need to improve citizens’ lives by increasing production, fairly distributing opportunities, creating jobs, and ensuring good governance.

They also expressed that today’s generation must work to build a strong economy, and future generations should inherit a united, progressive, and democratic nation. If Nepal continues to follow the constitution, people’s mandate, and elections, the federal democratic republic will grow even stronger.

To truly establish a republic, people at all levels of society need to embrace republican values and live by them. The system must focus on development, good governance, prosperity, and national pride, including every citizen in the journey of nation-building.
