Nepal proposes 12 conditions for registering ships in internal waterways

The new Ship (Operation and Management) Bill, passed by the National Assembly and sent to the House of Representatives, proposes 12 conditions for registering ships operating in Nepal’s internal waterways.

According to Article 7 of the bill, ships must meet the following requirements:

  1. The type and purpose of the ship must be clearly stated.
  2. The ship owner must be a Nepali citizen or a firm/company registered in Nepal.
  3. If built in Nepal, the ship must have a construction completion certificate; if imported, purchase documents and product conformity certificates are required.
  4. Safety arrangements for passengers and cargo must be in place.
  5. The ship must be insured as per Article 15.
  6. A survey certificate must be attached as per Article 19.
  7. A pollution-free certificate must be attached as per Article 56.
  8. Details of passenger and cargo capacity must be provided.
  9. Information about crew members, including training certificates, must be attached.
  10. Any disputes regarding ship ownership must be resolved and proof submitted.
  11. Environmental protection standards under existing laws must be followed.
  12. Registration fees, survey fees, certification fees, and applicable taxes must be paid with proof.

These rules aim to ensure that ships operating in Nepal’s waterways are safe, legally compliant, and environmentally responsible.
