Neymar has extended his contract with Brazilian club Santos until the end of 2025. His main goal is to return to top form ahead of the next FIFA World Cup.
“I made this decision by following my heart. Santos is not just a club — it’s my home, my history, and my life,” said the 33-year-old forward in a statement released by the club.
Neymar began his football career at Santos before moving to Barcelona, then Paris Saint-Germain, and later joining Saudi club Al Hilal. However, injuries limited him to just seven games in 17 months. He returned to Santos in January 2024, with his original contract set to expire on June 30.
Even after returning, injuries continued to trouble him. Over five months, Neymar has only played 12 matches and scored 3 goals. In a recent match against Botafogo, he was sent off after scoring with his hand and receiving a second yellow card.
After 12 games in the Brazilian Championship, Santos are barely staying out of the relegation zone based on goal difference.
Neymar’s comeback has also sparked controversies. He was criticized for partying during the Rio Carnival and appearing in a show like the ‘Kings League’ despite being injured.
Neymar is Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals, surpassing the legendary Pelé who had 77. However, he has yet to fulfill his dream of winning a World Cup.
In March, Neymar was set to return for Brazil in two World Cup qualifying matches, but a thigh injury forced him to withdraw. In May, Brazil’s new coach Carlo Ancelotti left him out of the squad for the first time.
“I picked the players who are fully fit. Neymar is just returning from injury. Everyone knows how important he is, and of course, we’re serious about having him back,” Ancelotti said.
