Nepal’s Gen Z protests have caused a major crisis in the country. Following demonstrations that began in early September 2025, over 13,500 prisoners escaped from various jails. The unrest was triggered by government actions, including a ban on several social media platforms.
The central jail in Sundhara saw around 3,300 inmates escape, while about 1,400 fled from Nakkhu prison in Lalitpur. Other prisons and detention centers also experienced mass escapes, including 149 of 585 inmates from one facility and 76 of 176 from a juvenile home. The chaos was fueled by violent protests, arson attacks, and confrontations with law enforcement.
After the Nepali Army was deployed to restore order, authorities managed to recapture over 300 escaped prisoners. Security forces along the India-Nepal border also apprehended several escapees trying to flee, including five Indian nationals and four Nepali citizens.
The protests have resulted in at least 31 deaths, including three police officers, and over 600 injuries. In some areas, security forces fired to prevent mass escape attempts, injuring inmates. Despite the resignation of Prime Minister Oli and the formation of an interim government led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, demonstrations continue, with protesters demanding political reforms and accountability.
The situation remains tense, with the military and police continuing efforts to restore order and address the causes of the unrest.
