The post of medical officer at District Prison Parsa has been vacant for several years. Currently, a Health Assistant is providing medical care instead of a doctor.
The issue came to light after inmate Rahul Sah Turaha died on Tuesday while being treated at Narayani Hospital.
Officials and stakeholders have called for a doctor to be assigned to the prison for regular health checkups.
Khimraj Bhusal, Chief of District Prison, said a request has been sent to the Department of Prison Management to deploy a doctor as per the vacant post.
Parsa Prison currently houses over 1,300 inmates, including foreign nationals.
