Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Thursday evening posted two messages on Facebook affirming that the Nepal Premier League (NPL) must continue. He wrote, “NPL should not stop,” and added, “NPL is our national pride; prepare it well.”
The first edition of the NPL was held last December. Soon after, complaints were filed with the Anti-Corruption Commission regarding financial irregularities in the league. The commission then sent letters to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council (Rakhep) requesting action.
In response, Rakhep formed an investigation committee. Later, under the direction of Sports Minister and Rakhap Chairman Tej Lal Chaudhary, a new investigation team replaced the previous one. Due to unsatisfactory responses to their queries, this team sent a letter instructing that no NPL activities proceed until the investigation is complete. The unauthorized sending of this letter drew criticism towards Minister Chaudhary.
Prime Minister Oli visited Satdobato on Thursday to inaugurate the National Sports Science and Research Center and the National High-Performance Center. There, he urged stakeholders not to politicize the NPL issue.
He emphasized, “Prepare well for the NPL. It is our national pride, and we must uphold it. Cricket is progressing nationally, so we should make the league more attractive. The Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Council, and Nepal Cricket Association must all focus on this.”
Oli further said that politics is necessary before entering government, but once in office, officials must focus on their responsibilities without politicizing their work. Whether it is agriculture, industry, music, literature, or sports, efforts should focus on development rather than political interests.
Additionally, the Prime Minister warned the National Sports Council and the Ministry of Youth and Sports regarding the repeated delays of the 10th National Sports Games. He stated, “The National Sports Games must take place in Mangsir (mid-November to mid-December). Further delays would be shameful, and no excuses will be accepted. The event must happen on time.”
This message reinforces the government’s commitment to promoting sports and ensuring transparency in national sporting events.
