Police firing in Saptari: Why did it happen?

In Saptari, police fired shots while trying to stop illegal liquor smuggling to India. During this, one man died.

The victim was 35-year-old Lalu Yadav from Rajgadh Rural Municipality-2, Kamalpur, near the Nepal-India border.

According to DSP Jitendra Basnet, police got information about a large amount of liquor stored for smuggling to India around 10 PM. A team of 10 police officers led by Inspector Birendra Kumar Yadav went to control the liquor.

When police reached, smugglers attacked the team. To protect themselves, police fired four warning shots in the air. But one bullet hit Lalu Yadav in the left thigh.

Yadav was taken to Gajendra Narayan Singh Sagarmatha Hospital at 11:30 PM but died there.

Police seized 80 cartons of liquor from Kamalpur. More liquor was found at the site. Smugglers attacked police with stones and sticks, making it hard for police to control the situation.

Two police officers were injured by stones. The police are still investigating the incident.
