Several prisoners escaped from Jhumka Jail in Sunsari after a group of people, under the name of Gen Z protesters, broke in on Tuesday night.
The jail had a total of 1,098 inmates in blocks A and B. According to jailer Subash Lamichhane, the group used force to free the prisoners.
He said most of the inmates managed to escape. As they were fleeing, a Nepali Army team arrived, and some prisoners were kept inside. “We tried till the end, but to avoid more damage, security forces pulled back,” Lamichhane said. “After the Army reached, some escaping prisoners were brought back, but the exact number is yet to be confirmed.”
The same group also freed detainees from police offices in Pathari and Urlabari of Morang. There were 19 detainees in Urlabari and 14 in Pathari. The group also burned case files at the Pathari branch office.
