Meteorologists have predicted that heavy rainfall will begin in Nepal from Saturday night.
Currently, the monsoon line lies near Uttar Pradesh in India, but it is expected to move towards Nepal. As a result, widespread rainfall is likely across the country until Monday.
According to Sanjiv Adhikari, a meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the weather will remain mostly normal today and tomorrow during the day. However, starting from the day after tomorrow, the monsoon is expected to become more active. The rainfall system will gradually move from east to west, increasing rainfall across Nepal.
Adhikari told Media, “The low-pressure line around Uttar Pradesh is likely to shift slightly northward towards Nepal. This is expected to bring more rain.”
Earlier, a low-pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal had moved towards Nepal through Odisha, India. It was predicted to bring good rainfall to the dry areas of Madhesh Province. However, the system later shifted towards Allahabad in India through central Bihar, reducing its impact in Nepal. Only light rain was observed in some parts of the Madhesh and Terai regions, and some areas only saw cloud cover.
The new weather system is expected to be stronger. Adhikari said that although there was some rain in central and western Nepal recently, the system wasn’t close enough to cause heavy rain. But now, since the low-pressure line is moving closer from the east, rainfall is expected to increase.
He added, “Looking at the current situation, rain is likely to begin Saturday night and become heavier from Sunday to Monday. We will continue to update the forecast.”
Binod Pokharel, associate professor at Tribhuvan University’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, also said that there may be light to moderate rain in some areas until Saturday afternoon. However, heavy rainfall is expected to begin from Saturday night starting in eastern Nepal.
He warned, “Since heavy rain is predicted across Nepal until Monday, people should stay alert.”
