The protest that started on Wednesday after the death of Lalu Prasad Yadav from Rajgadh Rural Municipality-2, Saptari, has been called off.
Yadav died after being shot by police during an anti-smuggling operation. Following his death, locals had launched a protest.
The protest was ended after a multi-party meeting held at the District Administration Office on Thursday reached a five-point agreement. The meeting, chaired by Chief District Officer Bhola Dahal, expressed sorrow over the incident and paid tribute to the deceased. It was agreed to form a high-level investigation committee and provide compensation based on the committee’s report.
The meeting also agreed to recommend the suspension of Inspector Birendra Kumar Yadav, who led the police team, until the investigation is complete. According to CDO Dahal, the protesting side agreed to stop all protest activities and perform the final rites after receiving the body.
Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was also the chair of a local school management committee, was shot dead by police during a nighttime operation based on a tip-off to stop smuggling. After the incident, his relatives and locals protested in Rajbiraj throughout Wednesday, and the protest committee had given a 24-hour ultimatum to fulfill their demands.
