A clash broke out between protesting teachers and police in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu. The incident happened when police tried to stop teachers who had gathered on the Bijulibazar–New Baneshwor road to protest.
The clash started after teachers tried to enter a restricted area, and police attempted to block them. Tensions rose quickly, and some people in the crowd threw stones at the police.
The situation in Baneshwor remains tense. Police used water cannons to disperse the protesting teachers.
Teacher Purna Blon, who witnessed the protest, claimed that outsiders had infiltrated the demonstration. “We were peacefully protesting for our demands. Some unknown group tried to break the police barricade, which led to the clash. Then the police used water cannons,” he said. Blon also mentioned that a few teachers were injured during the incident.
Teachers have been protesting in Kathmandu since April 2, demanding that the government introduce a teacher- and employee-friendly law. They had also announced a nationwide school strike starting April 7.
Although there have been talks between teachers and government representatives, no agreement has been reached yet.
Because of the ongoing protest, the new school enrollment campaign, the checking of SEE exam papers, and the annual Grade 12 exams have been affected. The Grade 12 exam, originally scheduled for April 23, has now been postponed to May 3.
