Two prisoners have died again in Jhumka prison, Sunsari. The deceased are 24-year-old Sagar Rai of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City-10 and 48-year-old Ramdev Uranw of Gadhi Rural Municipality-6, Sunsari.

Uraw was serving a 25-year jail sentence in a murder case since 2020, while Rai had been in custody since last Baisakh in a drug-related case.

According to acting jailer Ram Niraula, both prisoners suddenly developed breathing problems and were taken to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan. Uraw was admitted on Saturday night and died on Monday afternoon, while Rai died on Tuesday morning during treatment.

Sunsari SP Suman Timalsina said both bodies have been handed over to their families. After the deaths, the district security committee inspected the prison and directed the administration to run an immediate health camp.

Within just 13 days, three prisoners have died in Jhumka prison. Earlier, on Bhadra 4, 28-year-old Bikash Rai of Bhojpur, who was also in prison, died while undergoing treatment at BP Koirala Institute after falling ill.

SP Timalsina added that many inmates jailed in drug cases suffer from chronic illnesses, and the number of sick prisoners is increasing. The security committee has now planned regular health check-ups in both prison blocks and to transfer prisoners with serious health issues. Jhumka prison currently holds 1,794 inmates in Block A and Block B.
