The administration of US President Donald Trump has decided to end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) given to Nepalis. According to the BBC, the decision came after a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the Trump administration, clearing the way to cancel TPS.

This means around 7,000 Nepalis living in the US under TPS will have to return home. The US government had granted this facility to undocumented Nepalis after the devastating 2015 earthquake in Nepal.

At that time, nearly 15,000 Nepalis had received TPS. But under Trump’s strict immigration policies, the Department of Homeland Security decided to end TPS for citizens of Nepal, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

With the appeals court ruling, the cancellation of TPS will now move forward. TPS is a temporary relief program that allows citizens of certain countries affected by conflict or disasters to live and work legally in the US for a limited time.
