In the sixth minute of injury time, 17-year-old Spanish forward Lamine Yamal had a golden chance. He entered the penalty area with only Inter Milan’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer in front of him. Despite pressure from defenders, Yamal was in a perfect position to score — but his weak left-footed shot went straight to Sommer’s hands.
That moment ended Barcelona’s dream of reaching their first Champions League final since 2015.
Yamal had played well in the second leg, creating chances and constantly troubling Inter’s defense. But his missed opportunity meant the match ended 3–3. In extra time, Inter Milan scored and won 4–3, sealing a 7–6 aggregate victory and a place in the final.
In the first leg, Yamal had scored a brilliant goal at home. But in the second leg at San Siro, he couldn’t repeat that magic. He had another shot during extra time, but Sommer made a fingertip save to keep Inter ahead.
Sommer later said, “The save I remember the most is Yamal’s last shot. He’s an amazing player. Luckily, the ball didn’t go in. When we were down 3–2, most teams would have given up. But we didn’t — and we won.”
Earlier in the game, Sommer had also made an incredible one-handed save in the 77th minute to deny Yamal from long range. The drama continued when Francesco Acerbi scored to level it, and Raphinha gave Barcelona the lead again in the 87th minute.
At the end of the match, Yamal looked heartbroken. He covered his face with his shirt. If he had scored that last-minute goal, it could have been a historic moment for him and the club. Barcelona last won the Champions League in 2015 and were hoping to return to the final after 10 years.
Yamal has had a great start for both club and country — but this night will be one he’ll remember with regret.
