Renowned Telugu actor and former MLA Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at his residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. He was 83. As per initial reports, the actor had been battling age-related health issues for some time.

Kota Srinivasa Rao was widely regarded as one of the most versatile actors in Indian cinema. Over a career that spanned more than 40 years, he left a deep impact on the silver screen and theatre stage alike, playing roles that ranged from menacing villains to affectionate elders.

From stage to screen: A remarkable journey

Rao began his film career in 1978 with Pranam Khareedu, and soon emerged as a force in Telugu cinema. His memorable performances in Pratighatana, Muthyala Muggu, Gaayam, and Aahaa! showcased his remarkable range and acting depth. He also acted in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi films, earning respect across industries.

Off screen, he was also a public servant. In 1999, Rao was elected as an MLA from Vijayawada and served one term in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

In 2015, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in the country, for his contributions to Indian cinema. He also received nine Nandi Awards in various acting categories, a testament to his enduring talent and popularity.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), calling the veteran actor’s passing an “irreparable loss” to the Telugu film industry.

“The demise of the renowned actor Kota Srinivasa Rao, who won the affection of cinema audiences with his versatile roles, is deeply saddening. His artistic contributions to the fields of cinema and theater over nearly four decades will remain unforgettable,” Naidu wrote. “I express my profound condolences to his family members.”

As the Telugu film fraternity mourns one of its most cherished figures, fans across generations remember Rao not only for the characters he played, but for the humanity and craft he brought to each one of them.

His legacy, both on-screen and off, will continue to inspire actors and audiences for years to come.
