The contractor working on upgrading the TU cricket ground in Kirtipur has been fined for failing to complete the work on time. The project includes building a parapet (seating area) and installing floodlights.

According to the Ministry of Urban Development, the contractor was penalized as per the agreement for missing the deadline.

As stated in the contract, the company must now pay a fine of 0.05% of the total project cost each day, which amounts to more than Rs 2 lakh daily.

The parapet construction was contracted to BKOI KCDC BG Joint Venture (JV), and the floodlight installation to Vision Ishwari JV. Both companies signed agreements with the Federal Secretariat Construction and Management Office in Sanogaucharan on Falgun 19 and 22, 2081.

The parapet construction deal was worth Rs 49.25 crore, while the floodlight project was contracted for Rs 47.37 crore.

Office head Chakrabarti Kanth said the companies were notified on Asar 30 that they would start incurring daily penalties for delays. “Since Tuesday, they have been paying the fine and continuing the work. They will be charged daily until the work is completed,” he said.

By law, they can continue working with penalties for up to 200 days, equal to 10% of the total contract value. If they still fail to finish within that time, they may be blacklisted.

The contractors have promised to finish all work within a month. So far, 4,000 seats have been installed, and 3 out of 6 floodlight poles have been erected.

The parapet project is 63% financially complete and 77% physically complete. For the floodlights, financial progress is at 29% and physical progress at 45%.
