Ships registered and operating under Nepal must now display the national flag. This rule is part of the Ship (Operation and Management) Bill, which has been passed by the National Assembly and sent to the House of Representatives.
The proposed bill defines two types of ships those operating in Nepal’s internal waterways and commercial ships that will operate in the seas outside Nepal.
It includes a separate provision requiring the display of the flag. It states that every commercial ship registered under this law must have a Nepal flag, in a size approved by the authorities, proportional to the ship’s size.
The Nepal flag will act as a symbol of the ship’s nationality. With the flag, ships will be entitled to the facilities and respect given under international agreements when at foreign ports or in international waters.
