A large group of Gen Z protesters clashed with security forces in New Baneshwor after forcing their way into the federal parliament building. Demonstrators managed to enter the premises and pelted stones inside before police pushed them back using tear gas and water cannons.
The protestors, however, have not stopped. Despite the District Administration Office issuing a curfew order in the area, rallies and confrontations continue around the parliament. At one point, protesters reached the security posts inside the compound and raised Nepal’s national flag.
Authorities imposed the curfew after protesters broke through the gates, vandalized property, and attempted to occupy parts of the parliament building.
The protests, largely led by young people from the Gen Z generation, have spread beyond Kathmandu. Demonstrations have also taken place in Janakpur, the capital of Madhesh Province, where crowds gathered against corruption, government mismanagement, and the recent decision to shut down social media platforms.
Similar protests were reported in Biratnagar, Butwal, and several other major cities. In many locations, police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds, particularly after protesters tried to march through restricted zones.
In Kathmandu, a rally that started from Maitighar advanced through police barricades and reached New Baneshwor. Another group coming from Tinkune also pushed forward, gathering at the gates of the federal parliament. Both groups eventually converged at the main entrance, leading to tense standoffs with heavily armed security forces.
The Gen Z-led movement has announced demonstrations nationwide, vowing to continue their campaign until the government withdraws restrictions on social media and addresses growing frustration over corruption and poor governance.
