Two people have died after being buried by a landslide in Ilam. At least 10 others are reported missing, though police have not yet confirmed this number.
According to Ilam Police, houses have been buried in several areas including Mane Bhanjyang, Deumai, and Ilam Municipality. Police said they are facing difficulties reaching the affected areas and collecting data due to the challenging geography.
In Ilam Municipality Ward No. 6, Ghos, two members of the same family died after their house was buried by a landslide, while three others are missing. The victims were two children from the family of Dambar Bahadur Pakhrin. Search and rescue operations are ongoing at the site.
Local youth Rebaz Tamang said two injured people are being prepared to be taken to the hospital for treatment.
Similarly, in Maijogmai Rural Municipality–6, five members of Barmalal Sogmi’s family are missing in a landslide. In Sandakpur Rural Municipality–3, Sulubung, two members of Kumar Sedhai’s family are also missing. Police said five more people are missing in Mangsebung as well.
Ilam’s Chief District Officer, Sunita Nepal, said floods and landslides have caused damage across the district, but the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed. She added that search and rescue efforts have been continuing since early morning as the rain has stopped.
