The 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin exactly one year from today, on June 11, 2026, in Mexico City. The final match will be held on July 19 in New Jersey, USA.

This World Cup will be historic for two big reasons. First, it will be hosted jointly by three countries for the first time—USA, Canada, and Mexico. Second, there will be 48 teams competing, instead of the usual 32 in previous tournaments.

The qualification process is moving quickly across different continents. Some teams have already qualified, while others are still competing for a spot.

From Asia, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Jordan, Australia, and Japan have already secured their spots. Teams like Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Iraq, and Oman are still fighting for two direct spots and one playoff chance.

In South America, Argentina, Brazil, and Ecuador have qualified. Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela, Paraguay, and Bolivia are still competing for three more spots. Peru is hoping to qualify through the playoffs.

In North and Central America and the Caribbean, the host nations—Canada, USA, and Mexico—are automatically qualified. The remaining 12 teams, including Honduras, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, Panama, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Guatemala, have reached the third round. Three teams will qualify directly, and three runners-up will get a chance through the playoffs.

From Oceania, New Zealand has qualified by defeating New Caledonia in the final round. New Caledonia still has a chance through the intercontinental playoffs.

As of now, no teams from Africa or Europe have qualified yet. Africa’s first round will end by October 16, while Europe’s qualifiers will continue until November 18. Nine teams from Africa and 16 from Europe will qualify in total.

Chile, which finished third in the 1962 World Cup, is already out of the 2026 qualification race.

The full list of 48 qualified teams will be finalized by March 31, 2026, after all European qualifiers and intercontinental playoffs are completed.
