Newcastle United have taken a big step towards qualifying for the Champions League next season after beating Chelsea 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday.
With only two matches left in the season, Newcastle have now moved up to third place in the table, overtaking Manchester City. Newcastle have 66 points from 36 games, while City have 65 from the same number of matches.
Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães scored the goals at St. James’ Park in a game that could prove crucial in the race for the top five Champions League spots.
Tonali gave Newcastle the lead in just the second minute with a close-range finish. Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 35th minute after fouling Sven Botman.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser in the second half but couldn’t find the net. Then in the 90th minute, Bruno Guimarães scored a dipping shot to seal the win for Newcastle.
This result puts Newcastle in a strong position as they aim to return to Europe’s top competition. Meanwhile, City dropped points with a goalless draw against last-place Southampton on Saturday.
