Rama Basnet Arrested for Spreading False and Misleading Content on TikTok
Police have arrested 31-year-old Rama Basnet for sharing false and misleading content on the video-sharing platform TikTok. According to Nepal Police’s Cyber Bureau, she was taken into custody on Sunday on suspicion of spreading ethnic and communal hate.
The Bureau stated that Basnet had been intentionally posting misleading and baseless videos, targeting well-known individuals and institutions. Initial investigation revealed that she made offensive remarks about the Madhesi community during TikTok live sessions and appeared to be trying to spread negativity and damage reputations.
She is originally from Halesi Tuwachung-6, Khotang, and was currently living in Bhaktapur. Police have charged her under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063, and arrested her from Bhaktapur.
As per the Kathmandu District Court’s order, she will be kept in custody for three days while the investigation continues.
