CPN-UML central member Ain Mahar has been arrested.
Based on a cybercrime complaint, the Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warrant against Mahar on Wednesday. Police have now taken him to the court to extend his custody for further investigation.
A complaint against him was filed at the Cyber Bureau, Bhotahiti, accusing him of character assassination and verbal abuse. The case was registered through a written complaint sent by mail.
Earlier, a woman had also filed a case against Mahar, accusing him of rape.
Mahar, a permanent resident of Bajhang, entered politics through the UML-affiliated student wing ANNFSU, where he served as president. He was also a candidate from Bajhang in the last House of Representatives election but lost to Bhanu Bhakta Joshi of CPN (Unified Socialist).
The UML had appointed him as a central committee member in December 2021. Later, after an audio clip related to sexual misconduct surfaced, he was suspended once, but the party secretariat later reinstated him.
