A new bird species has been recorded in the Manohara field of Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur.
The bird is called the Siberian sand plover. It was spotted on Asar 6 (June 20) by a team including Kumud Parajuli, Supradipta Neupane, and Shatrughan Pandey.
“It was drizzling, and we suddenly saw a bird that looked like a Tibetan sand plover. We took some photos,” said Neupane. “When we checked the pictures at home, we noticed it looked different, so we sent it for verification.”
On Asar 9 (23 June), the team sent the photos and details to the Nepal Ornithologists’ Association for confirmation. After reviewing the data and consulting with both national and international bird experts, the association officially confirmed it as a new species for Nepal.
The bird has been named Siberian Rajputrika in Nepali. It is found in regions like Siberia, Mongolia, Finland, Taiwan, Tibet, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Afghanistan, Bhutan, and other nearby areas.
With this discovery, the total number of bird species recorded in Nepal has reached 902, according to the Nepal Ornithologists’ Association.
