83 wild animals died, 135 rescued in Chitwan National Park last year

In the last fiscal year, 83 wild animals died in Chitwan National Park. Among them, 45 died from natural causes.

According to park information officer Avinash Thapamagar, 28 rhinos died. Of these, 18 died naturally, 3 died from fighting, 1 from electric shock, 2 due to floods and landslides, and 3 got stuck in swamps. The cause of death for one rhino is unknown.

One leopard and five elephants died naturally, but the cause of death for two elephants is unknown. One tiger died from fighting, and another tiger’s cause of death is unknown. Twelve chitals died from natural causes, and two died in road accidents.

One chital died from wire traps, and 16 chitals died from dog attacks. Other animals that died include 3 wild boars, 1 barking deer, 2 gharial crocodiles, 2 blue bulls (nilgai), 1 python, 1 jackal, 1 bear, and 2 other animals.

During the same period, 135 animals were rescued. These include 4 rhinos, 2 tigers, 7 chitals, 3 turtles, and 37 snakes.

Also rescued were 61 pythons, 11 mugger crocodiles, 2 gharial crocodiles, 2 vultures, 1 pangolin, 1 fishing cat, and 2 other animals.
