President appoints Sushila Karki as prime minister under article 61

President Ramchandra Paudel has appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the new Prime Minister under Article 61 of the Constitution. Until now, all governments in Nepal were formed according to Article 76 of the Constitution.

This time, Karki was chosen as Prime Minister following the youth (Gen Z) movement, and she received her appointment letter based on Article 61.

Article 61 of the Constitution mainly talks about the President’s role. It does not directly mention the powers or appointment of the Prime Minister. It states that the President is the head of state and carries out duties according to the Constitution and federal laws. The article also says the President must promote national unity and protect the Constitution.
