Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), was taken out of Rupandehi Prison in Bhairahawa on Saturday for transfer to Nakkhu Prison in Lalitpur.
He was escorted from the prison to Gautam Buddha Airport, where he will fly to Kathmandu via Buddha Air.
Lamichhane has been in Rupandehi Prison since Chaitra 25 (April) in connection with the Supreme Cooperative scam case in Butwal. In Jestha (May-June), he requested a transfer to Nakkhu Prison. Although the court approved it, the Home Administration delayed the transfer, which had led to protests by RSP in parliament.
A few days ago, a team from the National Human Rights Commission inspected Rupandehi Prison. Lamichhane told them he felt unsafe and found his stay difficult, which reportedly pushed the government to approve the transfer.
Supporters of RSP gathered in front of Bhairahawa Prison as Lamichhane was taken out. His flight was scheduled for 3:10 pm, but leaving the prison was delayed. The Prison Management Department officially approved his transfer nearly 40 days after the court’s decision.
